Firmenich posted industry-leading organic growth for its fiscal year ended June 30, 2007. Group sales increased 9.7% in local currencies, 8.6% in Swiss Francs, to reach an annual turnover of CHF 2.5 billion.
At the same time, continuous improvement in our production processes and leading-edge purchasing strategies helped us to minimize the effects of rising energy and raw material costs during the year.
In May 2007, we announced the acquisition of the Flavor Division of Danish ingredients company, Danisco. The acquisition was completed on July 2, 2007, and will reinforce our position in the global flavors market, as well as in natural ingredients for the fragrance and flavor industry. The move reflects Firmenich's long-term strategy of industry-leading organic growth and targeted acquisitions to complement our product portfolio.
Creating Success
Our passion for inspiring moments of happiness through smell and taste drove our talent for creating success in the different areas of our business.
We nominated five new Master Perfumers during the year, to mark their creativity, human values and commercial success – the qualities that reflect who we are.
At the same time, we continued to invest over 10% of our annual turnover in R&D. We filed 30 new patent applications during the year for new fragrance and flavor ingredients, processes and delivery systems. These will support our ability to remain the innovation partner of our clients across a broad variety of products - from fine fragrances to home care, and from beverages to snacks.
In August 2006, we opened a new R&D centre in Shanghai, our third after Geneva and Princeton. The centre will support our ongoing efforts to discover new ingredients and help us better understand consumer trends in Asian markets.
Citizenship & Sustainability
High standards of ethics and integrity, together with a strong commitment to a sustainable business model, are at the heart of our Firmenich Fundamentals.
During fiscal year 2007, we further improved our safety and quality record, though we still have improvements to make. In February 2007, we also became the first company in our industry to sign the World Safety Declaration. The Declaration serves as a platform for companies to work together to continuously improve, share ideas and report on their challenges, progress and successes. The move was in line with our aspiration to make our time at work the safest part of our day, which calls for efforts from each and every employee.
We were awarded two additional third party certifications during the year for occupational health and safety and environmental care. We also replaced our energy system at our main operating plant at La Plaine, in Geneva, Switzerland – a move that will further reduce our global CO2 emissions by over 5% annually.
Commitment to Financial Independence
Firmenich remained 100% owned by the Firmenich family and continued to maintain a sound financial base, in line with our ongoing commitment to the financial independence of the Group.
Our Board of Directors held seven meetings during the year, while our Finance & Audit Committee met three times and our Remuneration & Nominations Committee twice, in strict accordance with our corporate governance rules. Two new members joined our Board in October 2006. Mr. Yves Boisdron brings expertise from the specialty chemicals business at Rhodia, as well as insight into Asian markets. Mr. Vernon Sankey comes with significant experience of corporate Boards and knowledge of the fast-moving-consumer- goods world from his time with Reckitt Benckiser.
Our clients repeatedly underline the quality and distinctiveness of our people. We take this opportunity to warmly thank our colleagues around the world for their exceptional passion, talent and inspiration throughout the year. We also thank our clients, suppliers and local communities for their ongoing confidence and support.
Firmenich is not just the name of a Fragrance and Flavor company. It is the name of a Family personally committed to its clients for more than 110 years. Combining experience with innovation, Firmenich is today the largest private company in its industry.
We are dedicated to create high quality fragrances and flavors used by our customers in their consumer brands. Quite often, the products we perfume or flavor become bestsellers in world markets.
